H5 - Ludovic Houplain
It was first as a graphic designer that Ludovic made a name for himself, designing covers for the emerging stars of electronic music in the 90s and 2000s. De Crécy, Gopher, Vitalic, Air… Their albums are remembered today sometimes as much for their sounds as the visual embodiment of the covers. Founder and creative director of the H5 design studio, Ludovic works at the heart of the French Touch, directs music videos and creates a visual universe that mixes narration and graphics. Until he embarked on the production of the short film Logorama, which won an Oscar and a César in 2009. For Colector, Ludovic offers an original selection of covers whose powerful aesthetic makes them objects in their own right.
Can you introduce us to the selection of your works available at Colector?
These works are record covers that I had designed for the electronic music label Pamplemousse. Each of them is typographic and in two-tone. They were thought of as mass-market products inspired by packaging. This is in line with Andy Warhol's work, like the artworks "Giant Size 1.57$" or "Brillo". These works reflect the radical artistic direction of the label, contrary to what was done for the French Touch.
What would you like your works to inspire in those who discover them?
I like the idea that the original object becomes a pop culture object like the Wahrol Banana for the Velvet Underground. These are reproductions of covers that are part of an artistic approach. The original creation is emancipated…
Who are your major artistic influences?
Obviously Andy Warhol and his relationship with consumer society, I think we find this connection in "Logorama". The Bauhaus and its "Less is more" side, in my work on typography. But this work on typography can also be inspired by people like Ed Ruscha, through his paintings, but also his photographs, just like William Klein (New York). We can also add artists like Art Chantry, for his work with the Seattle music scene. I'll only mention a few... but above all I feel like I see new people every day who inspire me, influence me... It's limitless.
